We use the word “love” to describe so many different experiences... Loving your best friend is different from loving your favorite sports team, which is totally different from loving your intimate partner.
We know these differences intuitively, which can make love very confusing. In this website I'll share with you about the seven different type of love that we all encounter in our life. Understanding these flavors and knowing how to cultivate each one gives you a far broader experience of love, and more satisfying relationships. Have you ever noticed how some people find it very easy to love their close friends, but find it difficult to be in a loving sexual relationship...? Other people have a great connection to the divine, but have trouble showing up as a reliable partner. You may have met people who are great lovers, but can't hold a conversation...
Why is this? Because love is not one thing. It is not one emotion, and it does not have one action. Love is multifaceted, and our troubles come when we have not fully integrated all seven aspects of love. The first step is to understand which of these seven flavors is easy for you, and which is more of a challenge. Biological Love is about nature. We are part of life, and love flows through our body. Biological love governs our hormones, our natural attraction and sexual impulses.
In this domain, love is a force of nature, and the more we are attuned to our natural cycles, impulses and needs, the more we experience the loving support of life itself. Bonding Love is all about attachment. Babies literally bond with their parents and caregivers, and as adults we bond through physical touch, sexual intimacy and by sharing our deepest feelings. Bonding is both a biological process, and an emotional sense that "I belong with you".
We attach to the people that are the closest to us. Much of the suffering that happens in intimate relationships and in families arise because of disturbance and tension in this flavor of love, and it's also where there's potential for great healing. Warrior Love is all about action, support, and expressing love by doing things for each other.
It's about showing up. When you put yourself out for a friend in need, make extra effort to keep your promises to your loved ones, or help a team member to succeed - that's Warrior Love in action. Facing and overcoming challenges together creates a powerful, often lifelong bond. This is true Warrior spirit - to take a risk, take a stand and do it together. Heart love is about understanding each other, being seen and welcomed. Our heart longs to share love, contribute and be accepted as we are.
The heart is the source of compassion and appreciation for each others humanity, vulnerability and uniqueness. Heart love gives freedom while being deeply connected. When you feel that someone really 'gets' you, when your heart sings with joy, or you reach out to offer solace, you are expressing Heart Love. Creative love is about co-creating something bigger. Have you ever created something awesome with other people, and found yourself falling in love with everyone...? That's creative love at play.
It's the love between the painter and his muse, the singer and her accompanist, and the joy of being part of something greater than the sum of its parts. Creativity is about following your inspiration, sharing your ideas, playfulness and unique gifts with the world. Creative love shows you how much more is possible and opens the horizons of who you can be. Soul-seeing love is where we meet the each others essence. It's seeing the true beauty in the soul of the other. As we see someone's essential nature, we see our own brilliance reflected back.
We sometimes get a glimpse of this quality when look deep into a lover's eyes, or in the gaze of a loving teacher or spiritual guide. We may encounter our own essence through the beauty of nature or prayer. What matters is the falling away of veils as we look beyond the masks and dramas of daily life. In those moments so much love opens up, so much appreciation for the true nature of being. Divine love is all about the Grace of being. The very fact that you exist is an expression of love. There's a shower of love energy in the universe that is freely available, to everyone and everything, always.
This is what people mean when they say, "God loves you" or, "you are a child of the universe". This flavor of love is not personal. It has nothing to do with your bank account, marital status, color, shape or size. We are all divine beings, and love is our birthright. Sometimes we discover this truth in moments of huge crisis, when we encounter death or great loss. Sometimes it comes through great joy or magical moments of benediction. Whether we are in contact with it or not, divine love continues to shower upon us at all times.
